Learning poker isn't hard; playing it well is. But we all start the same way, and in 10 minutes you can have the basics to sit down at a table. Here's the path.
1. Learn the rules and the hands
First, how a hand is played (your 2 cards + 5 in the middle, 4 betting rounds) and which hand beats which. Without this, nothing else makes sense.
2. Master the 5 actions
On your turn you can only: check, bet, call, raise, or fold. That's the entire language of the game.
3. The 3 tips that save you the most chips when starting out
- •Play fewer hands: the #1 beginner mistake is playing too many. Fold the bad ones without hesitation.
- •Use position: play more hands when you act last (near the button); fewer when you act first.
- •Don't chase: if you have nothing and don't improve, fold. Don't “pay out of curiosity.”
