In poker you don't just play your cards: you play your cards from a position. Position defines how many opponents act after you, and therefore how much information you have when you decide. It is, without exaggeration, the most profitable variable in the game.
The order at a 6-max table
From earliest (acts first) to latest:
- — first to act; 5 opponents behind. Tight range.
- (Hijack) — middle position.
- (Cutoff) — right before the button, ideal for stealing the blinds.
- (Button) — the best: you act last after the flop.
- and — the blinds: forced money and bad postflop position.

Why does it matter so much?
Acting last is a brutal advantage: you see what everyone does before you decide. That extra information lets you extract more value when you win and lose less when you're behind. That's why from the button you open mediocre hands profitably, while from UTG you need solid hands.
