Before we talk strategy, let's make sure you understand how a hand is played. We'll use the most popular variant: Texas Hold'em. If you already know the rules, you can skip this module.
The goal
Win chips. In every hand there's a pot (the money bet in the center) and you want to take it. You do this in two ways: by having the best hand at the end, or by making everyone else fold before then.
Your cards and the cards on the table
- You get 2 hole cards (only you see them). These are "your hand."
- Up to 5 community cards are dealt in the center, which everyone shares.
- Your final hand is the best 5-card combination using your 2 hole cards + the 5 in the center.
The 4 betting rounds
The hand progresses in stages, and each one has a betting round:

| Preflop | You get your 2 cards. There are no cards in the center yet. |
| Flop | The first 3 community cards are dealt. |
| Turn | The 4th community card is dealt. |
| River | The 5th and final card is dealt. |
If two or more players remain after the river, the showdown arrives: cards are revealed and the best hand wins.
The blinds: why there's always something to fight for
Before the deal, two players post mandatory bets called blinds (the small blind and the big blind). That way there's always an initial pot worth winning — otherwise, everyone would just wait for perfect hands and no one would play.
